Calas and Beaches in Javea

Crystal-clear waters in Javea

Javea, Moraira’s neighbour, is a fantastic coastal town with many little calas and beaches to choose from. Many are not as accessible as Moraira’s beaches but they are worth the extra effort.

Today we are taking on a little tour of our favorite beaches in Javea !

1 – Playa del Montañar

This beautiful little beach sits right next to Javea’s Marina in the heart of the city. It is very easily accessible and there are parking facilities nearby. The turquoise water is always crystal clear and there is a very relaxing vibe to the area, mostly visited by locals. You can also enjoy the view from one of our favorite restaurants in the area : Cala Bandida.

Our tip: The beach is a pebble beach so pack some decent footwear and a thick towel !

 2. Bahia de Javea – Playa de la Grava

This is the perfect spot if you are a water sports enthusiast ! This rocky beach that links El Arenal and the Marina is very open and often exposed to powerful winds. You’ll often see kite surfers, sailing boats and kayak on Playa de la Grava. This beach is also home to some of the best beach bars of the area, our favorite being La Siesta.

And if you enjoy Thai food as much as we do there is a fantastic Thai restaurant on the beach : Monsoon. There green papaya salad is to die for !

Our tip : This beach is not a “family-friendly” option, we recommend it to people looking for adrenaline not farniente !

3. El Arenal

El Arenal beach is one of the biggest beaches in Javea and one of the only one with sand. This is by far the most “family-friendly” and accessible option on the list.  The beach is bordered by a very busy promenade with an array of restaurants, shop, bars and clubs. Some of our favorites are La Bambula, Achill and Chabadaba ! El Arenal is also perfect to watch the sun set over El Montgo while sipping a delicious cocktail.

There are many options available : kayak and SUP rentals, beach volley nets, beach tennis lessons, sun loungers rental etc.

Our tip: Go early. El Arenal gets busy in the summer and parking spots are very limited.

4. Cala Blanca

Cala Blanca, which means “White Beach”, is a small pebble beach with crystal clear water, making it a perfect spot for snorkeling. Being less accessible than el Arenal, it is also usually a lot less busy, especially in the summer. Part of Cala Blanca are only accessible on foot through a narrow staircase along the rocks.

Our tip: Don’t forget your snorkeling gear ! This is truly one of the best spots to explore marine life.

5. Cala Sardinera

Cala Sardinera, which takes its name from traditional sardine fishing, is an unspoiled little beach visited by locals. It can only be reached by boat or through the path leading to the Portitxol Mirador. The access is not easy but the walk to the beach through untouched nature and the privacy this beach offers are well worth the visit.

Our tip: Pack decent footwear and some snacks/water as there are no facilities nearby.

6. Cala Portitxol

Javea’s most instagrammable beach ! Cala Portitxol is one of the most affluent areas in Javea and is home to some famous Spanish and international celebrities. This little beach has also gained a lot of fame through social media thanks to its picturesque little white and blue fishermen houses and beautiful turquoise waters.

The beach can be accessed through the Cabo de la Nao road or through the path from Portitxol Mirador.

Our tip: Cala Portitxol’s recent fame has dramatically increased its occupancy. If you’re planning on visiting during the summer we recommend you get up early to secure a spot !

7. Cala Ambolo

Cala Ambolo us undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches in Javea : an unspoiled environment, turquoise water and soft with sand. Keep in mind that the left side of the beach is an unofficial nudist beach also bathing suits are allowed.

The beach is accessed through stairs that are not “family-friendly ” !

Our tip : This beach can occasionally be susceptible to landslides, so we strongly recommend visiting Javea’s tourism website to make sure the beach is safe. We’ve never experienced any problems but fyi the safest part is the one next to the stairs and we don’t recommend sitting too close to the cliffs.

8. Cala Granadella

Last but not least, Cala Granadella ! This spectacular beach has been voted “most beautiful beach in Spain” on numerous occasions and rightly so. Its singular horseshoe-shape and unbelievably blue waters make it a truly unique place. You’ll find a couple of little restaurants and limited parking facilities nearby.

Our tip : This beach is smaller than it looks and gets busy in the summer. We strongly recommend going early and renting a sunbed. Javea’s town hall is also organizing shuttle services to help with the busy parking problem.
