WHAT TO DO ON A DAY in DENIA?

Visit the castle and enjoy the view

On top of having some of the most spectacular views in Denia,  The Castle is also an interesting display of multiple cultures. You’ll find architectural elements from the Moorish invasions as well as Renaissance and Modern era. Don’t forget to take a stroll in the “Les Roques” neighborhood.

In the summer they are open from 10:00 to 20:30 and sometimes offer a “Castle at night” visit until 00:30.

Explore Denia’s Old Fishermen Quarters

Known as “Port” and “Baix la Mar”, this area used to be the heart of the city and home to local fishermen and tradesmen. You’ll find picturesque colourful traditional houses, narrow alleys leading to beautiful squares and fountains and some interesting local art. Baix la Mar is also one of the best places to go out : visit the new food market “Los Magazinos” or stop at “Al forn” for some stone-oven cuisine. End your visit on the promenade along the Marina to admire the “Sea Museum” and some exceptional yachts.

Walk on the Las Rotas Promenade

Located on the East side of Denia, Las Rotas is the more “exclusive” side of town with multi-million villas and celebrities. It’s not difficult to see why this part of town is popular with the local jet-set, Las Rotas is simply stunning. The walk along the sea is punctuated by small natural pools and crystal-clear water. Start at the Marina in town and walk to the end of Las Rotas to have lunch at Restaurante Mena, a local institution and one of our favorite paella restaurants.

Enjoy miles of sandy beaches

As much as we love our Moraira beaches they can get a little crowded in the summer. That’s when we like to head for Denia and its miles and miles of sandy beaches. The further you go from the centre of town, the more likely it is you’ll have the beach (almost) to yourself. Water is usually shallow and calm, perfect for swimming or paddle-surfing. Our favourite spot is the “Deveses” beach, with its famous windmill. It’s never too busy and we can have a wonderful sunset dinner at the Cova del Mero restaurant.

WHERE TO EAT in DENIA?

If you’re spending a day in Denia, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to great restaurants.

Denia has something to offer for everyone, no matter their budget, from cheap tapas to Michelin star restaurants.   These are five places that we love to visit…but there are plenty of fantastic restaurants in Denia.

Cova del Mero

Located at the end of the Las Marinas strip, Cova del Mero is the secret place we like to escape to on the weekends. It’s a “no frill” beachside restaurant that serves delicious paella and seafood since 1972. There’s nothing like watching the sun set on their terrace with a chilled glass of Albariño and great company. Make sure to book, they get very busy in the summer, especially on weekends.

One of the must places to go for paella in Denia, this place is always buzzing with waiters carrying gigantic paella dishes and local families sharing a meal. Their traditional menu includes all the best dishes of our local cuisine, you won’t be disappointed. Make sure to book!

Al Forn

Al Forn is located in the old fishermen’s neighborhood and offers delicious traditional pizzas and tapas. They have a huge stone oven (make sure to go inside and have a look) and the food is very reasonable and so fresh. Don’t even think about turning up without a reservation or you’ll end up having to queue !

Els Magazinos

Els Magazinos is a fairly recent “food hall” concept in the heart of the old town. This is a great option for groups with different tastes or simply if you like hoping from stall to stall to try something different. From nikkei cuisine to tacos, sushis, cheese boards or even oysters…there’s something for everyone. Make sure to check their website as they often have live music and art events on.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR DAY IN DENIA

1- Parking in Denia. Denia being a busy city, parking can sometimes be a bit tricky. The Marina has a large (paid) carpark and is close to most attractions. There is also an underground carpark next to Calle Campos.

2- It is possible to walk from the Old Town to Las Marinas but we don’t recommend doing it in the heat. Take your car or use the local bus.

3 -Local markets take place on Monday and Friday mornings in the centre (Calle Campos etc).

4- The centre and the “Baix la Mar” areas are linked by a shortcut : a pedestrian tunnel that goes under the Castle ! Don’t miss it
